About Our Irregular Cardigan Buttons

Most replacement buttons are flat, round and forgettable. These irregular cardigan buttons are not. Each one is a softly squared shape with edges that wander a little, so when you line six of them down a placket, no two catch the light at quite the same angle. The face has a milky, shell-like sheen, and it sits in a slim metal frame that follows the same uneven outline.

Three finishes

Gold-tone with a pearl white face. The warm one, and the one most people reach for first. It sits happily on cream, camel, oatmeal and navy.

Silver-tone with a pearl white face. Cooler and quieter. Good on grey, white, denim, and anything you would rather keep understated.

Gunmetal with a pearl black face. The dark option, with a smoky frame around a deep, almost inky centre. Black, charcoal, forest green and burgundy all take it well.

All three are metal-tone finishes rather than precious metal, so a full set stays consistent from button to button.

Picking a size

You get a choice of 16mm, 19mm and 22mm.

16mm is the everyday size for cardigans, lightweight knits and blouses. Noticeable, not loud. 19mm is the middle ground, and it suits thicker cardigans, chunky knits and shirt jackets. 22mm is the statement size, and it holds its own on coats, blazers and oversized knitwear where a smaller button would simply disappear into the yarn.

One thing worth doing before you order: measure the buttonhole, not just the old button. A squared, uneven outline needs slightly more room to pass through than a round button of the same width, so if your holes are on the tight side, drop down a size.

Sewing them on

There is a shank on the back, so no thread ever crosses the front. The pearlescent face and the frame stay clean, and the button sits a little proud of the fabric, which is exactly what a thick knit needs. Every pack has a needle and thread in it, so nothing stops you starting the evening the parcel lands.

How many to buy

Six covers one cardigan front, a repair, or a small craft project. Ten makes more sense if you are doing cuffs as well, working through more than one garment, or you just want spares in the tin. Buttons go missing. Spares are cheap insurance.

Not just cardigans

A pair of them will lift the cuffs on a plain blazer, and the 22mm size is heavy enough to sit properly on a wool coat. Some people use one or two on a denim jacket pocket, purely as decoration. They also work on bags, hats and cushion covers, anywhere a sewn-on detail makes sense. If you sew for other people, the ten-pack lets you keep a couple of finishes on hand instead of reordering halfway through a project.

A note on the finish

The face is a pearlescent coating and the frame is a metal-tone finish, not solid precious metal. You will see small differences in depth of shine and surface texture from one button to the next. That is normal for this style, and it is part of why a row of them never looks machine-stamped.

Take them off or cover them before a machine wash, keep bleach and abrasive cleaners away, and a soft dry cloth is all they need afterwards.

Updating a cardigan you already own is the quickest way to make it feel new again, and these irregular cardigan buttons will do most of that work for you.
