About Our Flower Shaped Wooden Buttons
Some projects call for a plain round button. Others deserve something with a bit more character. These flower shaped wooden buttons belong to the second group: a six-petal outline with softly rounded petals, a raised rim, and two holes set into a shallow dished centre. Sewn onto a cardigan or a child’s dress, they read as a deliberate design choice rather than just a way of holding the front closed.
A Shape That Keeps Its Definition
The petals are cut with enough depth that the flower shape survives contact with thick fabric. On chunky knitwear a flat printed button tends to sink into the surface and disappear; the raised rim on these keeps a clear edge against the yarn. The dished centre does the same job for the thread: it sits slightly below the button face, so your stitches are protected from rubbing and the button front stays clean.
Seven Tones to Work With
Cream and Natural are the two palest, warm and softly bleached like unfinished timber. Mustard brings a muted golden yellow, the most colourful of the range without being loud. Then come three browns of increasing depth: Light Brown reads warm and apricot, Medium Brown is a straightforward mid tan, and Red Brown leans chestnut with a reddish cast. Black finishes the range as a dense matte tone with the grain just visible beneath the dye. Buying two or three of the browns together gives you a graded set for a single garment.
Where They Work Best
Cardigans and hand-knitted jumpers are the obvious home for these, and the flower shape is particularly at ease on children’s clothes, pinafores and baby cardigans. Beyond garments, they suit aprons, tote bags, cushion covers and fabric baskets. Sewn on purely as decoration, they work in a row along a pocket edge or scattered across a yoke. Card makers, scrapbookers and doll clothes makers use the smaller size for the same reason: it looks like a flower before it looks like a button.
Picking Your Size
15mm is the size to choose for blouses, baby and toddler clothes, fine gauge knits, doll clothing and paper craft. 20mm suits cardigans, shirt jackets, dresses, aprons and bags, and it is noticeably easier to fasten, which is worth considering for children’s clothes and for anyone with limited hand strength. Replacing something? Measure the old button across its widest point. Starting from scratch? Cut a test buttonhole in a fabric offcut first, since a flower outline needs marginally more room than a plain circle of the same width.
Looking After Them
Treat them as you would any wood trim. Hand washing is best. For machine washing, choose a cool gentle cycle, turn the garment inside out, and avoid long soaks. Skip the tumble dryer, bleach and direct ironing, and let the fabric dry naturally rather than on a hot radiator. Water sitting on the surface for a long time can raise the grain or draw colour out of the deeper tones.
A Few Honest Notes
The wood is dyed, so grain and depth of colour shift a little between individual buttons and between production batches. That variation is part of how wood behaves rather than a fault. Photographs are a guide only, since screens render warm browns differently. Measurements are taken across the widest point of the flower, with a tolerance of roughly 0.5mm. Keep away from children under three years old.
